A physiological and biochemical approach to selecting the ideal diet for Ostrea edulis (L.) broodstock conditioning (part A) ArchiMer

To select the best microalgae for Ostrea edulis conditioning, four single species diets were fed to batches of broodstock, which were then compared using physiological and biochemical approaches. Ingestion and absorption were first studied, showing that Chaetoceros gracilis and Skeletonema marinoï were efficiently ingested (4.9–5.3 mg g−1 h−1) and absorbed (1.9–2.5 mg g−1 h−1) while Tetraselmis suecica led to the lowest physiological responses (0.36 and 0.12 mg g−1 h−1 respectively). When O. edulis were fed any microalgae except T-ISO with only 79 mg g−1, gonads accumulated carbohydrates from 116 to 141 mg g−1 and the extent of accumulation depended on the species supplied in the order T. suecica<C. gracilis<S. marinoï. Association among growth, food consumption-related traits and amylase gene polymorphism in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

To examine further a previously reported association between amylase gene polymorphism and growth in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, ecophysiological parameters and biochemical and molecular expression levels of alpha-amylase were studied in Pacific oysters of different amylase genotypes. Genotypes that previously displayed significantly different growth were found to be significantly different for ingestion and absorption efficiency. These estimated parameters, used in a dynamic energy budget model, showed that observed ingestion rates (unlike absorption efficiencies) allowed an accurate prediction of growth potential in these genotypes. Calculations of results in grazing experiments using the counting method OMA

Different formulae used in the literature for calculation of ingestion rates are reviewed. Their applicability is discussed in relation to two criteria: the occurrence of saturation of the feeding and/or growth of the food particles. It is shown by simulations that the differences in results obtained by calculating ingestion following a linear or an exponential model are restricted to a few percent. Dietary neutral lipid level and source in marine fish larvae: Effects on digestive physiology and food intake ArchiMer

A growth depressing effect of high dietary neutral lipid levels in marine fish larvae has been reported. This may be a result of a decrease in the efficiency or activity of digestive enzymes, a reduction in absorption efficiency and/or a decrease in food intake. The present work reviews recent studies carried out on commercially valuable species (Atlantic herring, Senegalese sole, European seabass and gilthead seabream) that investigated the effects of neutral lipid level and lipid source (fatty acid composition) on some of these key factors influencing larval growth. Microplastics are present in marine habitats worldwide and may be ingested by low trophic organisms such as fish larvae, with uncertain physiological consequences. The present study aims at assessing the impact of polyethylene (PE 10-45µM) microbeads ingestion in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae. Fish were fed an inert diet including 0, 104 and 105 fluorescent microbeads per gram from 7 until 43 days post-hatching (dph). Microbeads were detected in the gastrointestinal tract in all fish fed diet incorporating PE. Our data revealed an efficient elimination of PE beads from the gut since no fluorescent was observed in the larvae after 48h depuration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different lipid sources on nutrient intake, performance, development and carcass characteristics of heifers raised in confinement. Twenty-one crossbreed heifers (Nellore × Santa Gertrudis × Braunvieh) received 600 g/kg forage composed of corn silage and 400 g/kg concentrate with a 58.0 g/kg fat content in the total diet. The following lipid sources were used: soybeans, protected fat (Megalac-E®) and soybean oil. Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of nutritional plans and breed composition on nutrient intake and digestibility, nitrogen balance, and performance of dairy heifers in tropical conditions. Thirty-six heifers - 12 Holstein, 12 Gyr, and 12 Gyrolando F1 (½ Holstein × ½ Gyr) - were housed in a tie-stall system and randomly distributed, adopting a completely randomized design in a 3×3 factorial arrangement (nutritional plans and breed composition). At 15 degree C, different concentrations of Phaeodactylum tricornutum are given to Crassostrea gigas . Ingestion, filtration, respiration, ammonia excretion have been measured. All ecophysiological response, except dissolved excretion, are dependent of food concentration. Energy balances have been determined and selectivity of particle size observed.

The selection of an ideal diet for Ostrea edulis (L.) broodstock conditioning (part B) ArchiMer

Four microalgae species (Rhodomonas salina, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Thalassiosira pseudonana and Pavlova lutheri) were evaluated to estimate their potential as food for Ostrea edulis (L.) reproductive conditioning. Best ingestion and absorption were observed with R. salina (3.44 and 1.59 mg g− 1 h− 1, respectively), followed by T. pseudonana (2.75 and 0.98 mg g− 1 h− 1) and P. lutheri (2.40 and 0.91 mg g− 1 h− 1). Oysters fed T. weissflogii exhibited the lowest ingestion and absorption values (1.40 and 0.68 mg g− 1 h− 1).
